Maintaining body weight in the normal range before and during pregnancy ensures good health of mother and child. Overweight mothers have risk of high blood pressure and diabetes and other problems during pregnancy. There is also a risk of macrosomia, a condition whereby the size of the baby grows leading problems during to labor and delivery. Being underweight is equally bad as it lowers the chances of getting pregnant and there is more chance of giving birth to a low weight baby.

Good nutrition is a prerequisite of pregnancy. A healthy diet helps in getting all the nutrients required for your body before and after pregnancy. One should stay away from junk food and instead should go for fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products.

Pre-pregnancy care needs active involvement of both the couples. The aspiring father should also follow a healthy nutrition plan and restrain from alcohol and smoking.

Vaccination for diseases like chicken pox, Rubella and others is important. These vaccinations need to be taken at least six months before conceiving.
