There has been a sensational late twist on deadline day with reports that Luca Toni has been re-signed by Fiorentina.

The veteran free agent was being linked with a move to Siena today, but he’s allegedly joined the Viola for the second time in his career instead.

The Viola made a move for the 2006 World Cup winner after their bid to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United collapsed.

Toni, 35, spent two seasons at the Stadio Franchi before his 2007 switch to Bayern Munich.

Toni: I'm going home

Luca Toni is delighted to have rejoined Fiorentina, the club where he made his name.

The veteran striker's return to Florence is the biggest shock of transfer deadline day in Italy, especially given that the Viola have been in pursuit of stellar names such as Dimitar Berbatov.

Aged 35, Toni has been without a club since leaving UAE based outfit Al Nasr.

“I'm going home, I'm happy,” he beamed in an interview with Tuttomercatoweb.

“Tomorrow morning I will be in Florence to perform the medical examination.”

Toni has signed a one year contract on a reported yearly wage of €500,000.

Fellow new signing Cristian Llama is also pleased to have joined the Gigliati.

“I'm more than happy to have joined one of the biggest teams in Italy,” said the Argentine on twitter. “Thank you for everything.”
